Election Day is finally here. As we await the results of the polls in who will be our next president of the United States for the next four years, may we remind ourselves these three truths:
- Voting is a Gift of Grace – I hope if you have the ability to vote that you would take advantage of this gift of grace. Many have sacrificed for your vote to matter and it is the most patriotic act we as Americans can do. The Bible says in Proverbs 29:2, “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Through voting you are able to vote for righteous policies and candidates. You are able to vote against wicked policies and candidates. Even if our political leaders are not followers of Christ, we can vote for biblical principles and values that will help shape our nation. Go vote today, it is a gift of grace to a nation.
- There is No “Christian Nation” – Certainly nations can put into practice biblical laws and policies as mentioned above, but politics cannot replace the gospel. The means by which God saves people is not through politics or politicians, it is through the gospel message of God’s great grace to sinners. Government is not the means to fulfill the Great Commission, it is the gospel. Government and politics will never lead people to Christ. Government can certainly help Christians advance the gospel, but it is not the Good News in and of itself. Sinners need not biblical policies and righteous leaders, despite how important that is, to be made alive in Christ. Sinners need to hear about Jesus, not Donald Trump or Joe Biden. May His name be on our lips more than theirs.
- No Matter who Wins, Jesus is still King – Psalm 22:28 says, “For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations.” No matter who wins the election today, Jesus is still King over the universe and all the nations, including America. May we not place false hope in these earthly rulers, but in the Ruler of all the earth. You can have peace and rest this Election Day knowing that no matter how the polls turn out, Jesus is still seated on His throne. Jesus and His throne is not up for a vote or transfer of power. He is King today, tomorrow, and forever. Place your trust and hope in Him and His Word, and not in government.
Like many of you I will be watching my TV today following the race. But, I will be doing so with a great sense of peace and comfort knowing that Christ already knows who will win and that Christ will remain King of kings (or president’s). God is faithful, and He is worthy of our trust amid a chaotic 2020. Do not be afraid to turn off the news today. Government is not the arbiter of truth or the future – God is.
